Multivitamins – Good In Theory, Poor In Practice?
The question of whether or not someone should consider supplementing with a multivitamin can be quite controversial. Most commonly the rationale for doing so is “just in case” an individual isn’t meeting all of their essential nutrient requirements through food. However, consuming multivitamins as an “insurance policy” has many caveats… and you may discover that they aren’t exactly the best provider (pardon the pun).
Swipe right to read our views, reasoning, and rationales for when it comes to multivitamins. Ultimately, supplementation of this type WILL contribute to your daily nutrient requirements… however the argument stands, is this contribution significant enough to warrant consumption? In our opinion… no. We strongly encourage a food-first approach, and only supplementing with specific nutrients if a dietary and/or blood analysis suggests doing so.
Think of it this way… consuming a multivitamin with 20+ different nutrients of low dosages is equivalent to going to the gym and doing 1 set of 20 different exercises… not exactly the most effective stimulus to stay well-nourished and grow muscle if you ask us.
If you’re concerned about your current nutrient status then it’s important to objectively determine if you’re deficient, have increased requirements, or if you’re at risk of a particular nutrient deficiency. To do so, we strongly encourage that you speak with a doctor about having a comprehensive blood test conducted, and consult with a dietitian to discuss your nutritional habits.
