The Benefits Of Hydration For Athletes

Wake Up, Get Hydrated, And Stay Hydrated!

Water is the most essential nutrient for supporting life, even more essential than food – you can’t survive for more than a few days without it!

The average human body is made up of ~60% water, which plays a vital role in maintaining circulation, digestion, thermoregulation, muscle contraction, and the transportation of nutrients. For instance, around 90% of your blood, 80% of your skin, 75% of your muscles, and 70% of your brain is composed of water. This means that staying adequately hydrated can influence your metabolic rate, it can help lower your blood pressure and heart rate, keep your skin clear, improve your athletic performance and concentration, and not to mention you can avoid headaches and cramps!

Due to factors such as climate, energy expenditure, dietary intake and gender, an individual’s water needs will vary. However, it is generally recommended that the average female aims to consume ~2.8 litres of water per day, and the average male consumes ~3.4 litres. Therefore, we encourage you to treat fluid intake and hydration status equally as important as sleep, nutrition and training.

Take note of the above factors that can influence hydration status highlighted in this infographic, and do your best to stay hydrated!
